Micro Air Abrasion - What Is It, What Does It Do?

Fillings without Needles!
This is the philosophy and practice of detecting and treating decay as early as possible, of removing as little tooth structure as possible, and of making the smallest possible restorations that are aesthetically pleasing and long lasting. No needles, no drill, no numb mouth!!! Learn more by watching the video to the left. |
What Is A Filling?
|
A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When a dentist gives you a filling, he or she first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material.
By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include the most popular material - a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), porcelain, gold, and although very rarely used nowadays - amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc). |
What You Should Know About Extractions...
|
Extractions become necessary when other restorative measures can't be completed or if the tooth is too damaged to be saved. They are often categorized as "simple" or "surgical".
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth, usually under local anaesthetic, and require only the use of instruments to elevate and/or grasp the visible portion of the tooth. Surgical extractions involve the removal of teeth that cannot be easily accessed, either because they have broken under the gum line or because they have not erupted fully. Surgical extractions almost always require an incision. Frequently, the tooth may be split into multiple pieces to facilitate its removal. Surgical extractions are usually performed under a general anaesthetic. |
Wisdom Teeth - These extractions often require the help of an oral surgeon, but could be done in the Smile Defender office, depending on how impacted the tooth is (under the gum, beside the bone/other teeth). We'll take an x-ray to help determine whether your case needs the help of a oral surgeon and then will assist you in getting those appointments set up.
